Driving Licences
- The cost of a provisional licence is £45.00.
- When you have passed your test you will need to convert your provisional license to a full driving license. This is free if your provisional license was issued from 1 Mar 2004 onwards, otherwise it will cost £9.00.
Theory Test
- Before you can take the practical driving test you have to pass the theory test.
- The theory test costs £28.50 and consists of two parts, multiple choice and hazard perception, both of which you have to pass.
- You take the multiple choice part on touch screens and to pass you have to answer correctly at least 43 out of 50 questions taken randomly from a bank of questions.
- For the hazard perception part you view 14 short video clips showing 15 potential dangers. The sooner you spot each danger the more you score with a maximum of 5 points for each danger. To pass you have to score at least 44 out of 75.
- Those with reading difficulties can listen to the questions through a headset, either in English or in one of several foreign languages.
- You will be given your results within 30 minutes of completing the test.
Practical Test
- The cost of the practical test is £48.50 for weekdays and £58.00 for Saturdays and weekday evenings. It will last about 40 minutes.
- You are allowed to have up to 15 minor driving faults during the test and still pass. You will be failed if you have any serious or dangerous faults.
- During the practical test you will be asked a show me and a tell me question relating to basic vehicle safety checks. Failing either question will be marked as one minor driving fault.
Miscellaneous
- The DfT's statistics show that for 2005/2006 the national pass rate was 42.6% and the pass rate for the Basingstoke test centre was 45.1%.
- All approved driving instructors are required to display a licence on their windscreen. Trainee instructors have a RED licence whereas fully qualified instructors, like myself, have a GREEN licence.
